Footpaths
We are fortunate for the many open spaces that still exist in the Borough of Barnet compared with some other parts of London.
This is due to the far-sighted actions of the then Hendon Urban District Council in the 1920s and 30s in buying-up the estates of former landowners (including Moat Mount Open Space, Scratchwood, Arrandene Open Space) and to the zoning of the Totteridge Valley and its edges as Green Belt after World War II.
MHPS produced its first Footpath Map in 1974 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Society and an updated version of this map is available to purchase from our Shop. This is not just a map, but a potted history of the area and its buildings.
Over the years, some landowners have tried to block footpaths or deter walkers. These footpaths are established rights of way and must be protected in the best way possible – regular usage.
